Hi everyone! Sorry this is a bit late. I spent today ... well, not sure celebrating is the right word, but we did swim in the rain, drink margaritas and watch my sister's neighbors set off illegal fireworks. So in honor of Fourth of July in the U.S., I bring you the Red, White & Blue Weekend Challenge.

Red: An object that is primarily red (like apples or crabs)
White: A song title with the word White in it
Blue: A phrase using the word blue

So let me know how many sets you want, and I will share the prompts with you, in the hopes that something will inspire you.

As always, you have till the end of Thursday anywhere in the world to write at least 300 words or make at least 2 icons or an equivalent. I will then reward you with a drabble, an icon, words in a WIP or possibly drink another margarita in your honor.

Prompts will probably come Saturday because it's getting late here but I will have them to you as soon as I wake up.

Theme: Working together

Summary: Winona is called to fix the cock-up of the Yorktown's engines. She uses one of the science-bitches to help her do it.

Reccer's Notes: This fandom has many versions of Winona Kirk. The one you get here is the engineer who does NOT fuck around and can fix anything you throw at her. She is irreverent and badass. And, in this particular story, she is wonderfully, delightfully contrasted with Spock, who is helping her fix the Yorktown engines. Yes, Spock is the science bitch.

I really can't say much more because I'm laughing too hard rereading the story in order to write this rec. Laz perfects the art of proving that swearing isn't what you do when you lack imagination. Every cuss word in this fic is a brilliant gem of hilarious, creative, and accurate speech.

Like every ridiculous fic that is very, very good, this one makes you believe that this Winona Kirk is not only possible, but is absolutely in character. It also makes you believe that this Spock is possible and will call Winona Overlord and let her call him Tiny Science-bitch.

So one of the mods brought up a good point about the posting dates, so there's going to be a slight change this round with when emergency posting will be. Official posting will, from now on, go from September 8th to November 30th since we have so many more posters than previous rounds. Emergency posting will go on for the entire month of December, and you will not have to sign up for it, you'll just post when you finish.

Also, with regards to submitting snippets if you don't think you'll finish your fic/art by November 30th: With December now being reserved for emergency posting, you CAN submit snippets for WIPs even if you can only finish by December. However, we strongly encourage you to be upfront with your artist if you're aiming for a December posting and come to a decision on what specific date to (finish) post(ing) by so you don't leave them hanging.

Challenge #72: What Makes You Happy

We all need some positive vibes these days, so this month the challenge is to draw or paint anything that makes you happy, or that makes your favourite characters happy. It could be a person, a place, a garden, a cup of tea or coffee, a pet, a stack of books - anything at all!

If you're into Star Trek, Spock could be what makes Jim happy, or for Blackbeard, it might be Stede. You can draw something fannish, or something personal, as long as it makes you or your characters happy.

A round-up post for submissions to this challenge will be done at the end of July.

Challenge 265:
TRICKSTER
a dishonest person; a person skilled in the use of tricks and illusion; a cunning or deceptive character appearing in various forms in the folklore of many cultures

Maybe he’s a con man, tricking other people out of their money or time. Maybe she’s a stage magician who can make your keys disappear and reappear in the blink of an eye. Maybe they’re an ancient being who’s been around for a very long time and enjoys playing tricks on unsuspecting mortals.

How does it go? Are your tricksters good at what they do, or could they use a little more practice? Do your other characters enjoy the experience?

Write a story about a trickster.

BONUS GOAL: “You can just call me ‘goddess’. Most people do.”

If your submission features this line, it will earn an extra point to be tallied in voting!

You know that feeling where you're enjoying inhabiting a book so much you don't want to reach the end? This week I finished The Witness for the Dead by Katherine Addison, and that's how I felt.

Witness is a companion novel to Addison's breakout novel, The Goblin Emperor (TGE), which I read for the first time last year and never got around to reviewing. You don't need to have read TGE to enjoy this one at all; Witness focuses on a minor character from TGE and his adventures after the events of that novel. Thara Celehar is a prelate of the god Ulis, and his role in elven society is something like a cross between a priest and a private detective. He has the ability to commune, in a limited fashion, with the dead, and he is employed by the city to provide this service to the people. This may involve reporting a deceased's last thoughts to a mourner, asking a deceased to clarify a point on their will, or seeking answers from a murder victim to bring their killer to justice.
